About

The Boat

We operate a 10.6m Hamilton-designed Marlborough hull, powered by a 420 hp Yanmar marine diesel engine, giving her a cruising speed of 20 knots. She carries 600 litres of fuel and 200 litres of fresh water, making her fully equipped for extended trips.

Originally built in 1989 for crayfishing in the wild waters around Stewart Island—hence the name “Oban Cowboy”— she was extended and re-powered in 2004 for Paua diving and charter fishing in the Cook Strait. With a well-proven hull design, she handles rough conditions with ease, operating comfortably in winds up to 40 knots.

The Oban Cowboy can take up to 10 passengers, and for larger groups, we team up with a fellow fishing charter to accommodate up to 26 people.

Directions

From Thames:
Follow SH25 toward Coromandel Town for approximately 50 minutes. As you descend the final set of hills, you’ll notice oyster farms, mussel barges, and boats moored in Coromandel Harbour. At the bottom of the hill, take a sharp left onto Te Kouma Road.
Continue for around 2 km. Pass the large concrete wharf (Sugarloaf) and continue onto the gravel road. On your right, you’ll see a long jetty—this is Hannaford’s Wharf, where the charter boats depart.
Follow the road around to the jetty; parking is available at the top.
